A photomask defines the pattern of the device to be fabricated. The photoresist is applied to the wafer and patterned by exposing it through the mask. It is necessary to accurately align the mask with the wafer. The mask and wafer are brought together with a precision aligning mechanism. The aligning mechanism typically includes a wafer holder having a first pair of slots, and a carrier. The carrier has a second pair of slots with precision opposing sidewalls. An inner surface of each slot is beveled. A pressure plate is hingedly attached to the carrier and has an aperture that aligns with the first pair of slots. As the wafer and carrier are pressed together, the pressure plate flexes the carrier relative to the wafer and slots to align the mask and wafer. This mechanism is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 4,717,766, issued to James R. Peterman on Jan. 5, 1988.
Typically, the carrier is pressed down against the wafer using a vacuum clamp. A vacuum is applied to the first pair of slots to hold the wafer in place while the second pair of slots align the mask with the wafer. A vacuum is also applied to the aperture in the pressure plate to hold the pressure plate in place. The pressure plate and carrier can be made of a relatively rigid material such as stainless steel. The pressure plate is hingedly attached to the carrier using a set of hinges. The hinges are relatively soft and flexible to allow the pressure plate and carrier to align with the wafer holder and mask.
